Customer service FAIL #2 – The telecommunications centre

We had a couple of phone bills to pay, and also since I went naked-dsl I also have a nice credit from my old telecoms provider.

I went into the store, half way in a guy with a clip-board decided he needed to ask if I wanted any help, um, just on my way to the service counter to pay some bills. He nicely showed me toward the service counter that I was aiming for (it’s not a big shop and I didn’t expect to need directions or get lost)…

Customer service FAIL #1 – At the cinemas

I went to see a movie last weekend, Avatar in 3D at an IMAX theatre near me. The movie was great, even going up and buying the tickets was all good and fine. I did have to ask about the 3D glasses though, not offered or mentioned until I raised the issue and was told to collect the specs at the door when I came in later for the movie.

OK, all good, so when we returned later and came in we got the glasses and half my tickets back all usual then we went for some munchies.

It seemed to be taking a while for them to server a group of three people in front of me, glad we were early as they seemed to take ages, not to worry, we waited.

I got BoB

So the story continues, I churned my ISP from TPG to iiNet. All went well and I was back online nice and quick, given I had already the hardware and the necessary smarts to do so. Part of the plan was removing my dependence on Telstra and getting an old-style telephone line, sure I still needed the copper to my house, but no longer needed to pay $30 each month for it to exist.

Damn automated call centres

Yes, I am converting over my ISP, and this includes no longer needing Telstra as a basic phone line system. So I am calling them today to confirm my account has been cancelled.

Ring ring…

So I may be able to help you, please say what this is about…

My internet upgrade – Phase 2

So far so good, the upgrade/churn of my internet connection from my old ISP to iiNet is going well. Last Friday, as planned, the technician transferred my connection at the exchange over. My phone went dead and my old services were off-line, it was all happening.

Churning my internet connection – the upgrade

For two years I have been waiting on my (and other) service providers to get ADSL2+ into my local, suburban, near city exchange. It’s not going to happen, for some reason this is a little box on a reasonable block of land that can’t accommodate new equipment. Of course the behemoth of Telstra has done it, and they have a few resellers, but my provider, TPG which has provided good service, has not even listed my Maidstone exchange for an upgrade any more, no plans, no mention and no light at the end of the tunnel.

Do so much more with dropbox

I have mentioned this program before, and as in the article I am about to link to, this simple program can do so much more than the basic service of ‘synching files’ that it was originally intended.

So what could ‘synching files’ mean to you?

I have a computer at home, in fact a few computers at home and also one at work. I have some files that I like to have on-hand at any of these locations. Even if these files are just some simple backups, chances are you will be in the wrong place at the wrong time to find them, and then when you do drag that old backup cd out of a drawer its scratched and out of date anyway.

This is where dropbox comes in handy. It stores your files in a secure account in the cloud. You can get them from anywhere at anytime and if you use it right, they are always up to date.

Case in point, I like the add-ons and options I have setup in Firefox. Various development and other bookmark plug-ins that come in handy. I got a new pc at work, and I could have gone to the trouble of then doing backups and transfer all these bits over to a backup drive and then re-installed them, but I saved myself a lot of work by having dropbox always running on my pc.

I then use a Firefox add-in called FEBE which every week will backup all my add-ons and settings from Firefox to a location on my drive, I point this to my synchronised Dropbox folder. Seconds after doing a regular backup, these files are also in my cloud-dropbox. I got my new pc, I installed dropbox and I re-installed all my latest add-ins and options there and then, no mess no fuss.

OK, You must get Dropbox and also setup an account which is free and easy. Up to 2Gb can be stored there (more if you want to pay a bit) and that’s it.

Next, to do my wonderful Firefox backup trick, get the add-on for FEBE

OK, the final thing that prompted me to write this article, here is 15 hacks, tricks, tips and other things you can use it for… Read on future dropbox fans.

Suspension Update

I needed to get some suspension work done on my bike, the Suzuki 250F across has done 50,000kms and was well due for a new kit in the front shocks.

I was about to get this done at my local service place along with the big engine service, when I happened upon a professional suspension place, and Izzy told me he would be happy to do a special deal.

While getting serviced, the forks went down to suspensions-r-us where the kit was put in and the springs replaced. All tuned up for me, customised and done right.

I now have “the best suspension for a 250 Suzuki in Victoria” and how can I argue, it is wonderful to ride, pulls up great, turns effortlessly and rides over those nasty speed bumps unnoticed.

Thanks Izzy.

Mythtv – More decoder cards

I mentioned the other day about the new MythTV software, all it’s glories and wonderful new features. I am still happy with it, more now than before as I test it further, find it’s features, but also struggle with some issues.

The big thing is the ability to decode digital television signals and turn them into a picture or recording. This is done with set-top-boxes, digital DVD recorders, Tivo, Foxtel IQ’s and everything in that line. The limitation is always that you want to watch one and record another, and for this you would need two decoders.
