New Names

   Posted by: Warren   in Observations

It is interesting how, because of political correctness, terrorism or some other perceived reason in life, things need to be renamed to make them more palatable or more accurate in their title.

Sometimes it is to make ones self more important, changing the title of a job title from cleaner to sanitation coordinator, from Manager to CEO. Sometimes it is because of that political correctness thing I mentioned above, from Actress to Actor or from manhole to person-hole.

These things could be seen as ridiculous and I understand that many of them are, unless in your in the seat of that change, then to you, it is very important.

Somehow though, while at the aquarium the other day, scanning over the sharks and stingrays, crabs and turtles did I hear the presentation of the ’sea jellies’ which is what they are now calling Jelly Fish.

You see, sea jellies, or a single sea jelly is not a fish, in the same way the a cat fish is not a cat or that a sea horse is not a horse, so somebody found it necessary to re-define the name of a jelly fish after 200 years plus of calling it that, it needs to change.

Is it similar in the way that we suddenly needed to re-define Pluto as an asteroid, which tends to have a particularly planetary movement where it orbits the sun, but it’s no longer a planet, it HAD to change?

I know, I understand, it’s been something I have seen in academic circles for some time, something I have seen by the academic community. It’s done to sell books.

This gives a whole new range of academics, professional people who really know about these things to write these updates down, throw in some recent research and re-release all the important facts about sea jellies to a whole audience, again, at a cost. All the plumbing guides have to be re-printed to include the word ‘personhole’ and all the managers to get bigger windows and cars worthy of their new status, titles.

Perhaps you can mention some others that are out there, some changes in terms and titles you have found interesting, complicated or unreasonable…
